Kitchen Hacks You Need To Try

kitchen hacks you need to try.Who doesn’t need quick and clever kitchen hacks? Am I the only one feeling like they’re spending ALL their time cooking and cleaning these days? Here are my top 10 favorite kitchen hacks (without buying any new gadgets!) to help us mamas make it through the holiday season (and beyond).

1. Shredded Chicken in a Minute

This is my personal favorite! After I cook my chicken breast in the crockpot, I whip out my hand mixer and on its lowest setting I “shred” my chicken in minutes. No more wrestling with two forks and a slippery piece of meat. If you have a KitchenAid, use your stand mixer’s paddle attachment.

2. Steak Fries in One Chop

Fries have never been so easy to make. Just peel your potato as you normally would (or not!) and then cut it with the apple slicer! Genius, right?

3. Freeze Single-Serving Sauces

Have you ever gotten to the end of the jar of sauce or maybe some amazing pesto but didn’t want to be forced to use it all at once? Hello, plastic egg cartons or extra ice cubes! Egg cartons are ideal for freezing small portions of almost anything.

4. Cutting Herbs in a Pinch

Instead of worrying about your knife skills, grab your pizza cutter and bunch them up and wheel back and forth.

5. Food Too Hot for the Kiddos?

Use a mini fan to cool it down quickly.

6. The Waffle Maker Isn’t Just for Waffles!

If you’re using your waffle maker just for breakfast waffles, you’re not using it to the best of its abilities. Did you know you can make Cinnabons, grilled cheeses, hash browns, omelets, and brownies in it? The best part about using the waffle maker is it allows for easy cutting for small hands.

7. No More Stirring

Are you tired of stirring your no-stir nut butter? Store it flipped over!

8. Limp Produce is in Your Past

Have you ever left your celery, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach, basically any green in the veggie drawer (or worse plastic bag) too long and it’s limp and sad? No need to throw it out! Just trim the top and bottom and drop the stalks upright into a jar of ice-cold water to re-crisp.

9. Egg Slicers Aren’t Just for Eggs

Next time you need to slice mushrooms or strawberries, instead of reaching for your sharpest knife, reach for your egg slicer instead! It’s so easy and fun. You can get the kiddos involved too!

10. No More Clumps

Since it’s baking season, I thought it might be helpful to remember how to stop your brown sugar from clumping. Just toss a couple of marshmallows in the bag or canister to prevent clumping.

Maria Sette
Maria is a full-time mom, teacher, wife, daughter, and sister, who feels pulled in too many directions! Her older son Michael took over 24 hours to be born, and at six-months-old was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shrimp, and wheat…all after exclusively nursing because she was SO SURE that would help him be a healthy kid. Luckily at age 1, he began to outgrow some of his allergies. Fingers crossed the others will soon follow because that plus a husband who doesn’t eat any veggies and Maria always battling her weight makes for three meals to prepare every night. Luckily, Christopher, her younger son, is a cooperative eater! As someone who has always been committed to making positive change, Maria uses her privilege and position as an educator and mom to work toward a most anti-racisit, equitibile, and inclusive world. Recently, Maria has even started getting up at 5am to workout in her basement. (Thank you pandemic living!) She is addicted to reading chicklit on her Kindle app in the dark, most Trader Joe’s products, and watching TikToks.
