Summer Reading! It’s Not Just for Kids, You Know!

0

Summer Reading for AdultsWhen I was a child, I loved being a part of the summer reading program at the library. A lover of books and a super fast reader, I was always among the top readers of the summer; I won some cool prizes and even made the local paper. My eldest child is following in my footsteps, and we can not wait for the summer reading kick-off at our town library. And when I say we, yes, I mean we! Libraries have summer reading programs for adults, too.

The way summer reading works for adults is quite similar to the children’s program. At my library, we calculate how many pages we read and earn a raffle ticket every time we reach 100. The raffle tickets offer a chance to win some pretty cool themed baskets that have donated items and certificates from around town as well as the latest bestsellers. I did a quick search to see how many of our Fairfield County libraries offer summer reading for adults and was excited to see that most of them do!

You may be thinking, how can I ever find time to read when I need to be chasing after my kiddos all day? Some of the best advice I received as a new mom was to let my kids catch me reading. Isn’t it so much better for your kids to see you engrossed in a book rather than the latest email on your cell phone? I don’t feel guilty having a good book handy while my children are busy playing together as long as safety is not of concern.

Another way to get some reading in is to have a family read aloud of one of the classics each night. My daughter’s elementary school participates in a Big Read every March where everyone in the school reads from the same book every night for the entire month. This has started a nice tradition in my house to read a chapter or two from a novel/classic rather than just our traditional picture books. Those books can count as your summer reading, mamas! It also is a great way to introduce your children to some of your favorites.

Shannon
Shannon has lived in Fairfield County, CT for most of her life and currently lives in Monroe. She has a daughter L (September, 2008) and a son B (May, 2012). Shannon balances being a wife and mom with working 186 days out of the year as a special education teacher. Thank goodness for vacations, summer break, and snow days! You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.
