It’s berry season. Strawberries, that is. I can’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the end of another school year than an afternoon of strawberry picking at Jones Family Farm in Shelton, CT.
My children and I went for our annual outing this past Monday, and I am always pleasantly surprised at what a great time we have there. The Jones Family seems to understand what children enjoy, from the wooden climbable horse when you first walk into the Berry Ferry that takes you to your assigned patch and then some play time in the little house.
As I dragged my children to the car after our fun afternoon, I realized I had only spent under $5 for the strawberries, and my children had a blast. It was also a different activity for mommy to enjoy besides the usual playground, museum, or library outing. We are lucky that Jones is right down the street from our house. Often, during the pumpkin season, we go multiple times to play!
For those of you who only know of Jones as a place to pick some berries or pumpkins, let me let you in on another hidden gem: Farmer Market Fridays! The Farmer’s Market is hosted at the winery every Friday in July and August and is very child-friendly. So after you pick up some locally grown produce, you can saunter over for a wine tasting and some tasty nibbles. If your kiddos get restless, the winery has a little playroom. I mean, really, I couldn’t have designed a better setup for a mom and tot afternoon out.
If you are looking for a different kind of summer activity, be sure to check out Jones Family Farm for strawberry and blueberry picking, as well as Farmer Market Fridays from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Be sure to check the website or the Farmer Jones Crop Line (203-929-8425) for picking conditions updates and times. Perhaps I will see you there!
What fun and great pictures!! I am still hoping to get there this year though I know they are winding down. It’s a short season! They are only open for a half day on Sundays so I haven’t gotten there yet but now you are really making me want to go!
You definitely should. The Sunday half day makes it harder, but T would definitely love the experience.
