Starting New Traditions: Family Movie Night

MovieNightCuddles

On Fridays, we stay home. It’s Family Movie Night. Everyone knows that.

We have pizza from Colony, two kinds of candy (daddy’s pick) and everyone cuddles on the couch with the dogs.

During the week we talk about what movie we’re going to watch. Sometimes we pick from new releases, while other times dad and I get to take a trip down memory lane with oldies, but goodies like Goonies and Troop Beverly Hills.

Soon our friends began asking for movie recommendations, so we started posting photos every Friday night of the “screen” on Instagram under the hashtag #familymovienight. I loved that other families were enjoying the same tradition, putting their own spin on it and trading their picks for movies.

Family Movie Night

Our girls are almost eight, so they have a longer attention span than some of your children may at this point. But that doesn’t mean you can’t start your own movie night tradition. You just have to find a theme that works for your family. A total win is finding a great movie that is part of a larger series.

Here are some recommendations to get you started (trying to avoid listing obvious Disney choices):

For the Littles: Wreck-IT Ralph // Monsters Inc. // Ice Age // The Little Mermaid (Warning: Ursula is scary)

For the Animal-Loving Family: Beethoven 1, 2 & 3 // Ratatouille

For A Good Laugh: Honey I Shrunk The Kids, Honey I Blew Up The Kid // Home Alone 1, 2 & 3 (Home Alone 4 is an entirely new family – so bizarre)

For the Wild Imaginations: Harry Potter Series – should keep you busy for a while (Warning: Voldemort is scary looking)

For Parents of Younger Children Seeking Non-Animated Relief: Night At The Museum Collection

Movies You Will Truthfully Enjoy Watching (Even Again): Nanny McPhee 1 & 2 (First was better)// Diary of A Wimpy Kid Series // Ramona & Beezus // The Incredibles

Favorite Newish Release Animation: Toy Story 1, 2 & 3 // Kung Fu Panda 1, 2 & 3 // Despicable Me 1 & 2, Minions, Despicable 3 // Inside Out // Home // Big Hero 6

For The Parents of Girly Girls: Gem & The Holograms (not-so-secretly loved this one) // Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer // American Girl Movies (Isabelle, Grace, Molly, McKenna, Saige, Samantha & now Lea) // Sophia Grace & Rosie’s Royal Adventure

Blast From The Past: Troop Beverly Hills // The Goonies // Princess Bride // Back To The Future

In the Mood for a Classic: Matilda // Parent Trap // Karate Kid

And while it’s great to take a break indoors in the A/C this summer, don’t forget about all the opportunities to take the family for an outdoor movie night experience in Fairfield County!

What’s your family’s favorite movie?
