Simply Green

Personal Care – the list of items we need is endless. The lotions, creams, gels, masks . . . just thinking about the choices makes my head spin. Now add the element of greening your personal care. It seems impossible, right? Well, it isn’t. Here are some easy steps to making some small changes to your personal care regime that allows for alternatives that are safer for your skin and the environment.

EWG’s Healthy Living App

Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Website and App. If reading labels is too confusing, the EWG Skin Deep search engine will help you out. Search for all types of skincare and personal care products; they are given a hazard scale of 1 – 10 letting you know which products to stay away from. I’ve been using the website since my first born was in diapers. Now there is an app for your phone where you can scan products right in the beauty aisle. Perfect place to research anything from sunscreen to baby wipes. It’s that easy.

Make Your Own. Our household’s top three go-to products IMG_7616for our skin would surprise you: Coconut Oil, Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV), and Chamomile tea. These three can solve a plethora of ailments and the bonus is I know exactly what I am putting on my family or my body when I use them. Check out this list of ways to use coconut oil from The Hearty Soul. It is my favorite for oil pulling, eczema relief, and healing a sunburn. ACV is antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral. We use it both topically and orally for a whole range of things. Check out the list of 5 Reasons to Wash Your Face With ACV. Last but not least is Chamomile tea; this is our antibacterial superstar for itchy eyes and other body parts.

Avoid the 4 P’s: Parabens, Phthalates, Perfume, and Petroleum. These are all chemicals that should be avoided in all personal care products. It is also important to choose petroleum-free products to protect the environment. Eliminate products that contain mineral oil, paraffin, and propylene glycol, and look for products that use beeswax instead.

These are just a few ways to go Simply Green with your personal care products. What are some ways that you have greened your beauty routine?

Shannon
Shannon has lived in Fairfield County, CT for most of her life and currently lives in Monroe. She has a daughter L (September, 2008) and a son B (May, 2012). Shannon balances being a wife and mom with working 186 days out of the year as a special education teacher. Thank goodness for vacations, summer break, and snow days! You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.
