“You’re never too old, too wacky or wild, to pick up a book and read with a child!” – Dr. Seuss
Happy Read Across America Day! Today is the annual National Education Association’s celebration of reading. We celebrate this day every year in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday to encourage and motivate reading for all children across the United States. Reading to our children is one of the most important gifts we can give them. I can’t say enough about the importance of reading to (and with) your child as they grow. Schools all over the county celebrate in different ways using Dr. Seuss’ larger than life characters as motivators for our children to be excited about reading. Here are some local celebrations in our area happening today:
- Stories, Crafts, and Music at the Westport Public Library – March 2, 2016: 4:00 – 5:00 P.M.
- Dr. Seuss Storytime and Movie at the Ridgefield Library – March 2, 2016: 9:30 – 10:15 A.M.
- Read Across America – Find the States & Authors Scavenger Hunt at the Wilton Library – March 2, 2016: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Feeling creative? Seusville, an online resource from Random House, offers up some fun activities to do at home with your littlest reader. From some simple character puppets to easy “Cat in the Hat” inspired snacks – check them out out here! Unable to attend an event or the thought of cooking green eggs and ham makes you queasy? No worries, simply talking to your children about the importance of reading and encouraging them to share some of their favorite book titles is a great way to spend the day. Carve out an extra bit of time before bed to read their favorites, share your own, and be sure to read a few from the birthday boy himself!
