Partying Like It’s 1999 Again

Recently I was in spin class, and Mariah Carey’s “Heartbreak” started playing. Suddenly I was transported back to my college days. The rush of euphoria was killed the minute the spin instructor announced, “Remember when this song came out, 20 years ago?”

SAY WHAT?!

How have two decades passed since I was an undergrad? When I think back to the life I was living then, it seems so foreign, like an episode of 90210 the college years. (For the record, I was totally Andrea). After graduating from UCONN, I was lucky enough to get a full-time job, two part time jobs, babysit and still have energy to go out at 9:00 p.m.

Again, SAY WHAT?!

As I continue on my trip down memory lane, I feel grateful for all I have accomplished since graduating college. I have been able to find my passion in life; teaching. I’ve traveled the world. I’ve bought two cars, met my spouse, bought a house and had two sons. Wow, nothing happened as I thought it would. Not too shabby.

Now I start wondering what the next 20 years will bring. Hopefully my family will continue to stay in good health, and I will still be teaching. But what else? What more do I want? What are my new dreams?

These questions are harder to answer than I anticipated. I realize now that since becoming a mom, I’ve slowly lost parts of me. Yes I still have my friends, job and a few hobbies, but what about the real me? Who is she? This season of my life is full, but if I’m not careful, the next will be empty…

So for the next 20 years I’m going to party like it’s 1999!

Maria Sette
Maria is a full-time mom, teacher, wife, daughter, and sister, who feels pulled in too many directions! Her older son Michael took over 24 hours to be born, and at six-months-old was diagnosed with allergies to dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shrimp, and wheat…all after exclusively nursing because she was SO SURE that would help him be a healthy kid. Luckily at age 1, he began to outgrow some of his allergies. Fingers crossed the others will soon follow because that plus a husband who doesn’t eat any veggies and Maria always battling her weight makes for three meals to prepare every night. Luckily, Christopher, her younger son, is a cooperative eater! As someone who has always been committed to making positive change, Maria uses her privilege and position as an educator and mom to work toward a most anti-racisit, equitibile, and inclusive world. Recently, Maria has even started getting up at 5am to workout in her basement. (Thank you pandemic living!) She is addicted to reading chicklit on her Kindle app in the dark, most Trader Joe’s products, and watching TikToks.
