On Your Feet: A Musical That Will Keep You Dancing at the Westchester Broadway Theatre

Imagine the thick tropical heat, palm trees swaying slightly from the warm ocean air, the oppressive South Florida sun beating down in waves. The cool drink in your hand is a welcome relief as you relax in your seat and sway your body to the rhythm of the live orchestra of Latin music, and the sultry singing and dancing of the cast.

It is easy to place yourself in this picture once the theater lights dim and the music and dancing begins. As Gloria Estefan’s song says, “[The] Rhythm is Gonna Get You.”

On Your Feet, playing now at the Westchester Broadway Theatre, tells the story of Gloria Estefan, from her childhood in Cuba, to her move to Miami and rising fame in the world of pop music. Early on in her journey is the story of how young Gloria met her future husband, Emilio Estefan, when she auditioned to be the lead singer in his band, The Miami Latin Boys. The band was renamed The Miami Sound Machine when Gloria took center stage. From a child singer in Cuba to her rise to fame in the United States, there is a rich background of stories that shape the portrait of her life.

Gloria’s family life is central to this story. This includes her close relationship with her grandmother, the heartbreak of watching her father suffer from a debilitating disease, and her quick rise through childhood having to care for her father and young sister. Gloria’s tumultuous relationship with her mother is also a an underlying theme.

Gloria and Emilio’s love story and his passion and drive to make her a star is an integral part of the tale as well. Along the way the audience witnesses Gloria and Emilio struggle to break through in the mainstream world of pop music, the adversities that come along with fame, and the true test of love and spirit when tragedy hits.

Also beautifully told through music and dance is the undying love and strength of family through war, separation, and assimilating to life in a new country.

The Westchester Broadway Theatre is a quaint venue with intimate seating which allows for ideal viewing of the performance. The dinner theater atmosphere allows for time to unwind and settle in before the show begins.

Take advantage of this opportunity to sit back, relax and groove to the rhythm of Gloria Estefan’s music, all while learning about her journey to stardom and motivational comeback after tragedy.

On Your Feet is on stage now at the Westchester Broadway Theater, 1 Broadway Plaza, Elmsford, New York 10523 through August 4, 2019.
