I’m No Gossip Girl – Twinning In Fairfield

To all those grocery store on-lookers who told me, “I must have my hands full,” well, they were right. To those people at the playground who told me to, “Enjoy every moment” because, “time does fly,” well yes, you were right too. Next month, my twins will be eight years old, going on 18.

I never thought I’d grow up to be a mom of identical twin girls. I never thought I’d be the first of my childhood friends to get married and have children. I never thought I’d live in the suburbs and volunteer on the PTA. I’m actually not so sure how I made it through high school? But here I am, and guess what, I’m a happy camper.

Sometimes I miss Brooklyn and the cool factor of Manhattan, but I’ve settled into my role as tourist when I visit. Accepted it, even – and that says a lot coming from a kid who mainly grew up in the city going to school with famous kids like GOOP on the Upper East Side. But I’m no gossip girl. Just your average mom, trying to get through each day on top.

Nope, there was nothing “In the water.” I didn’t “have IVF” and no, twins don’t “run in my family.” Identical twins are not hereditary. We just got lucky. It can happen to you, too. There are more than five women in my graduating class at Greenwich High School with multiples (but that’s another post), not to mention some other lucky contributors on our team!

Finding my people was hard. Mommy dating is not for the weak. But now that I’ve settled into my grown-up(ish) life, I’m excited to get back into writing with this amazing opportunity at Fairfield County Moms Blog. While many FCMB contributors have younger children, my hope is to add balance by sharing perspective on life with slightly older children, who happen to be siblings and identical twin girls. Life beyond the nap time cycle has allowed me to reinvest in myself both socially and professionally. My husband and I recently launched The Buzz Truck, a mobile food truck in Fairfield serving up organic coffee, tea and treats, and I also volunteer on the PTA and at local non-profit Near & Far Aid.

My goal is to share personal anecdotes from raising two strong-willed, yet sensitive elementary school-aged children, with a nice balance of reporting on Fairfield County happenings for moms who want to enjoy what the local community has to offer. Trust me, it’s a lot! We’re so lucky to live in such a cool place with beautiful beaches, parks and playgrounds, farmers’ markets and special restaurants (one of my favorite topics).

When I’m not drinking coffee with my family and three dogs, I’m dreaming of interior design, pretty stationary, gel pens, sushi, the ultimate 90s party, whether the elusive Jell-o 1-2-3 petition will ever sprout legs and what I’m going to be for Halloween this year.

Jessica
Jessica Grutkowski moved to Fairfield County from Brooklyn after the birth of her identical twin girls in 2008. Having grown up in Manhattan and gone to high school in Greenwich, CT, the area isn't new to her, but navigating life with multiples in the burbs certainly took getting used to. Jess enjoys being involved in and supporting the local community and isn't afraid to show off her Fairfield pride. Recently she and her husband Alex launched The Buzz Truck, a mobile coffee truck serving up organic, locally roasted coffee and treats. Jess also volunteers on the PTA and for her favorite local charities, Little Black Dog Rescue and Near & Far Aid.
