My first timer hockey crew

We’re no hockey family (Three quarters? Innings? Periods?), but with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers playing at Webster Bank Arena so close, we were excited to check a game out and see what all the hype was about.

I’m the planner and the adventure-seeker in the family, and it just so happens that our six-year-old son has become a major hockey fan because of a preschool pal. And also it just so happens to be the cutest new hobby of his that I’ve ever seen so I indulge him whenever I have the chance. After one play date with his preschool buddy, Daddy picked him up with full goalie gear in hand and told us his friend let him keep it. All of it. Helmet pads gloves, you name it. As a wanna-be-collegiate field hockey player myself despite my safety hesitations – I was secretly thrilled!

But I digress, so back to the game…

First things first – we had no idea the Bridgeport Sound Tigers were an affiliate of the New York Islanders. Go Tigers! As we entered the arena, we were treated by eager fans and full lines at every kiosk. Before the first period (see I remember now ha!) was over, my son was begging for a jersey. I found myself sounding exactly like MY mom when I caved and bought it and said, “Happy Hannukah!”

Before returning to our seats, the Sound Tigers had already scored, woohoo! We had great seats, and you could feel the cool air whipping off the ice. It was the perfect venue. My husband and I are hot blooded (and sometimes hot-headed) in many ways, so this was a nice change of scenery. We looked up the players and shook our foam fingers with glee. We even saw a fight in the third quarter and soon after we heard our daughter chanting “fight again, fight again. I want to see that again!” We laughed and hoped we didn’t scare them, but hey life is about experiences, and I’m glad they saw their first hockey game and ice fight with us.

Not only was the game action-packed, but there is so much to look at. As we looked around, we found the cutest dog on the planet. I don’t mean a physically little cute dog. I mean the best ruffled skinned faced dog ever. We had to go up to her owner and ask to pet her. She was a therapy dog and therefore allowed in.

The Sound Tigers won 3-1, and from start to finish, the game was so exciting. My son is now accruing his own new hockey equipment and has rocked that Bridgeport Sound Tigers jersey at least 10 times since then! Go Sound Tigers – you definitely have yourselves some new fans!
