As moms, we are constantly thinking of creative ways to entertain our children and keep them busy. We may even put our wants aside to ensure a fun experience for our children. My husband and I like to spend time each week looking and discussing what we will do that upcoming weekend with our children. He is quick to look for fun stops that the whole family will enjoy. Here are a few family fun stops that you may also enjoy!
Beardsley Zoo, Bridgeport, CT
This is one of my favorite places to visit on any given day. My daughters often request this zoo as they love seeing the spider monkeys. It is outdoors, and though not a huge zoo, it provides mom and dad a little bit of exercise without being exhausted. You will also find many other animals to walk around and visit. *Since COVID, you will need to reserve tickets ahead of time, so plan accordingly.*
Jelly Fish Tank at the Maritime Aquarium, Norwalk, CT
We recently visited the Maritime Aquarium for the first time. I could not wait to check it out as I had not visited an aquarium in years. It was also a great spot to beat the heat on a hot day. My kids were thrilled to see so many unique animals, especially during animal feeding times. One of our favorite places was the jellyfish tank. You can even pet the jellyfish if you like! It was one of the highlights of our trip. *As of Summer 2021, this museum does not have an admission fee for CT residents.*
The Adventure Park At The Discovery Museum, Bridgeport, CT
I think my husband may love this place just as much as my daughters. The Adventure Park offers a rope and zip line course. There is a smaller course for children under seven too. You do need tickets, and there are options to buy a membership. The courses are for beginners to a more experienced climber, as there are different rope courses you can go on. This place is hidden in the woods and gives you a true outdoor experience. The zip lines are my favorite part, and it is harder getting my husband to leave this place vs. my nine-year-old. *There is also a section for ax throwing for the adults and many package deals.*
The Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum, Norwalk, CT
This beautiful mansion was built in the mid-1800s by financier and railroad tycoon LeGrand Lockwood. It was designed with one-of-a-kind architecture and an exceptional interior design. This mansion was one of the first of its kind to have indoor plumbing and a central heating system that used coal-burning during the Victorian Era. After it was sold to the Mathews Family, a prominent New York City importer, it was then sold to the city of Norwalk. It was designed as a public park, preserved into a museum, and designed a National Historic Landmark in 1971. This is a must-see for any family member as the history, and unique design will leave you in awe.
Sherwood Island, Westport, CT
This is a beautiful state park with a beach that is part of the Long Island Sound. This beach is a nice, tranquil place to have a picnic lunch or look out at the views. If you are a Connecticut state resident (CT plates), there is no parking fee. Your family and kids at any age will enjoy Sherwood Island either playing in the sand or the water. You may want to remember to pack lots of snacks since there is not a concession stand. This beautiful hidden gem will be a great stop on your summer hot spots.
These fun stops across Fairfield County are some of our favorite spots to visit. Both my children and my husband, and I have found enjoyment and adventure. I hope these spots inspire you to find some adult and kid fun in the same visit as you look for things to do!
