Meet Tashel: Army Strong

0

Hi, my name is Tashel Smith and I am a Fairfield County mom. I am also a single mom of three kids. I never set out to be a single mom but that’s how things turned out.

I met my ex while serving in the United States Army. We were young and in love. Our duty as soldiers made it hard for us to start a family. We did several tours to Iraq and came close to death several times. We kept thinking and talking about the fact that we didn’t yet have any children to remember us. We didn’t want to die without ever having kids. So, in 2006 he decided to get out of the Army and I chose to stay. Later that year we welcomed a beautiful baby boy into the world.

It hasn’t been easy being parents. Over the years we’ve made mistakes, we’ve had struggles, and most definitely disagreements. Although now being apart we realize that our children deserve love from both of us.

I grew up in Fairfield County and after 18 years away I’ve decided to move back, but now as a mom. Being a mom has definitely taken on a new meaning. With their dad and I no longer together I have to watch my words. I have to be careful to not say anything bad about their dad. I need to focus on the present and on being a positive role model for them.

Being a single parent I’ve realized how important it is to be a part of a team; a team of moms who root for each other, support each other and who share ideas. So I’m here for that. I’m here to support, to share ideas, and to help remind each and every one of you that you are awesome.
