Did you know that 1 in 7 moms will experience a Perinatal Mood or Anxiety Disorder (PMAD)? I do, because I was one of them.
On August 25, 2019 our community will come together to raise awareness of Maternal Mental Health and to honor the life of Kara (Morrow) Kovlakas, an elementary school teacher and mother of two, whose life was taken by postpartum depression on October 13, 2016.
In 2017, Kara’s family launched the website Light For Kara with a mission to share Kara’s struggle with Postpartum Depression and to bring awareness to the number one complication of child birth, a Postpartum Mood and Anxiety Disorder (PMAD). Their hope is that by sharing their story, other families who may be struggling with a postpartum mental health disorder will find help, support and resources.
The 2nd Annual Light For Kara 5k will take place on Sunday, August 25, 2019 at Calf Pasture Bach in Norwalk. The event will shed light on maternal mental health and all proceeds will be split between the Malta House, a shelter in Norwalk for pregnant women, mothers and their babies and Postpartum Support International – Connecticut Chapter, an organization whose mission is to increase awareness about the emotional changes women experience during the perinatal period. At the event you will have the option of running a 5K or participating in a (kid and stroller friendly) 1 mile walk. In addition, children can participate in a free “fun run”.
Those who knew Kara remember her as vibrant, outgoing and loving. She was an avid runner and workout enthusiast. On the day of the race, her family would like others to remember her infectious smile, and for those who can relate to Kara’s struggles to know they are not alone.
