(A letter to my son before he becomes a big brother)

Dear Boden,

Little one, you’re no longer so little. And it all happened faster than I could prepare either one of us for it. As a stay at home mom, it’s mostly been you and me for the last two and a half years. While it hasn’t always been a piece of cake finding my way in my role as a mom, I can say you’ve been the greatest joy in my life. Our days together have been full of adventures, big and small, and it has been an absolute pleasure watching you absorb the world around you with those caramel eyes and seeing you revel in the tiniest of wonders this big world has to offer.

To prepare you for this change, you’ve learned about compassion for others, the importance of being gentle with things more fragile than you, and that one of the greatest gifts you have is your imagination. All of this will help us both as we navigate the next chapter together.

I want you to know that I have you to thank for teaching me about patience. For bringing me some of the happiest, most grounding and real moments of my life. For reminding me that being childlike and seeking adventure is ageless. For forcing me out of my comfort zone and giving me confidence I never had before becoming a mom.

I want you to know that your little brother is the luckiest to have you as someone who will show him the treasures of the world, both big and small. To have his back when he needs it. To be his friend through all of life’s ups and downs. I may be your mom but you’ve been one of the best friends I’ve ever had and I’m so proud to be able to share you with our new family member.

As we transition from a family of three to four, remember that your dad and I love you. Things will be different, but change helps us grow and learn, and makes us stronger people. We will settle into a new happy, even if the road to get there has a few bumps. Thank you for being our first child and showing us the ropes.

We’re in this together, kiddo. You’re going to be great.

Love, Mom.
