Winter has officially settled in, and moms everywhere are looking for some new ideas to keep the kiddos engaged and off the electronics. Just a few weeks ago, my children and I found a great activity that accomplished just that. We hosted our very own art show! Inspired by one of our favorite Yo Gabba Gabba episodes entitled, you guessed it,  “Art Show”, my little ones and I kicked off a snowy weekend day by planning and hosting one.

This fun activity became a very involved event that basically took up the whole day. If you have children that are into pretend play, it doesn’t take much to get the ideas in motion. The first step was creating our own art. Each person designed not just one picture but several using a variety of mediums – watercolor, pastels, and crayons. It’s amazing how invested my children became due to the added layer of friendly competition. Next up was creating some prize ribbons with different awards categories.

We made our awards out of some cupcake liners and leftover holiday ribbon. And of course every art show needs some refreshments! We made some yummy cupcakes to serve for the big event. These various tasks were spread out throughout the day, and we set the time for our show at 6:00 p.m.

Art Show 2

My children really went all out and decided to take dressing up to the next level by wearing their Halloween costumes. Some fancy clothes could also do the trick. We made an easy display on our fireplace using some twine and clothespins. Daddy was assigned as the judge, and the show began! We put on some classical music, served some purple juice in fancy glasses, and presented our art. Everyone was awarded a prize – even Mommy!

If you are looking for an easy indoor activity that involves arts and crafts, cooking, and imaginative play – plan your own art show! It’s that easy.

Shannon
Shannon has lived in Fairfield County, CT for most of her life and currently lives in Monroe. She has a daughter L (September, 2008) and a son B (May, 2012). Shannon balances being a wife and mom with working 186 days out of the year as a special education teacher. Thank goodness for vacations, summer break, and snow days! You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.
