Happy First Day of Spring {and Giveaway}

6

Today is the first day of spring, and I think we are all ready for it! I definitely love a cozy, snow day; but come on, Queen Elsa show us a little love here in Fairfield County. My children want to play on their swing set!!

The start of spring has always been a favorite time for me. Largely because it is a sign that summer vacation is only three more months away. With the first warm breeze that carries the scent of flowers in bloom, I am taken back to elementary school when our teacher was so excited about the warmer weather that she let us bring our writing work outside. Or my first year at college in New York City when sidewalk cafes were bustling with people and picnics in Central Park were abound.

Spring = Happiness. It signifies regrowth and awakenings in all of us, whether it be on a tiny level or a grander scale. With sunnier, longer afternoons, there is more motivation to do what makes us happy.

This spring is no different. I am ready to make some important changes in my life and am hoping the brighter days will help me feel more confident in moving forward. In my life, before having children, I had plenty of time in my off-hours to do all things creative – play my guitar, work on sewing projects, or homemade gifts. With one child, the time devoted to creative things lessened. With two children, it has altogether stopped – at least during the work week. As Betsy mentioned in her post, Remembering the Pre-Mommy Girl, it is important not to lose the women we were before becoming mothers.

Well, I am ready. In fact, I am ready to start taking it further and using some of my talents as my form of work. What I have come to find is that it is not so easy in my adult life with children to feel confident and “go get ’em!” So, I am starting off slowly. After putting this off for months, I think I am ready to open my own Etsy shop.

I recently dusted off my sewing machine (seriously, the thing actually needed to be oiled!) and started sewing up some bowties for Baby B with matching hairbows for big sister. Well, Valentine’s Day has come and gone, as well as St. Patrick’s Day, and my kids’ accessory collection has grown. Yet, I still have made numerous excuses for not uploading items to sell and officially being open for business. Now it is spring and, therefore, time to get a move on! No more excuses.

In honor of spring and the start of a new venture for this mama, I am giving away a bowtie for a little man or a hair bow for a little lady to one lucky reader. To enter, please write what you love about spring in the comments section by Sunday, March 23, 2014 at 8 p.m. My daughter will pick her favorite response, and the winner will be announced on Monday morning.

Happy Spring!

Shannon
Shannon has lived in Fairfield County, CT for most of her life and currently lives in Monroe. She has a daughter L (September, 2008) and a son B (May, 2012). Shannon balances being a wife and mom with working 186 days out of the year as a special education teacher. Thank goodness for vacations, summer break, and snow days! You can be sure that she fills those days with as many amazing activities and outings that she can think of to make up for the time that she is at work. In a distant life, way before babies, Shannon was an aspiring actress and musician. You can sometimes still find her leading sing-a-longs with her guitar at the kids’ playgroups or at her daughter’s school.

  1. Shannon, I’m pretty sure as a contributor I’m not eligible for the giveaway, but I just want to say how exciting this is and how adorable these are! Good luck with your Etsy shop! Looking forward to seeing more of your creations! 🙂 (and my favorite day of spring is always when Ferris Acres reopens for the season…ice cream and enjoying the outdoors go hand in hand in my book!)

    • Thanks so much, Jessica! I don’t see why you can’t be included as an entry especially since right now you are the only one 🙂

  2. I love how Spring brings out everyone’s happy side, myself included! (Especially after a crazy long winter like we’ve had). Way to go on your new venture! I look forward to seeing your Etsy shop!

  3. I love spring for the warmer and longer days, and it means we are just that much closer to summer vacation! Good luck to you Shannon!

  4. First off, congratulations on the etsy store, Shannon! I hope it’s everything you want it to be and more.

    Hmmm, what I love about spring… I love my hair to smell like the sun, the feel of the breeze on my skin while playing on the swings with El, and the first daffodils pushing their way through the dirt at the start of the season.

  5. Hi Shannon! I have friends with a son in Kindergarten in Monroe. I wonder if you know them. Feel free to shoot me an email bc I don’t want to post their name.
    Anyway, my favorite thing about spring is seeing all the brave little crocuses poking out their heads and laughing at the last bits of cold weather and snow, as if to say, “you are out of here – it is time for color to return!”
