Well, it’s officially February. The holidays have come and gone, and the thrill of winter has completely worn off. We can still hold out for a snowstorm for some outside play, but we are stuck in the house for the most part. Cabin fever has officially set in. Here are a few of our family’s favorite FREE indoor activities in Fairfield County.
Town Library
Check out your local town library for a plethora of free activities. Most offer a variety of free classes from babies to adults. Many also boast fun play spaces for toddlers and computer labs for school-age kids. Go to your local library’s website to see what is currently open and their “COVID” rules.
The Connecticut Library Consortium Free Museum Passes
Connecticut libraries also offer library members free passes to museums in Connecticut and surrounding states. You can “check” them out just as you would a book. You can find the latest list of museums here!
Connecticut Audubon Society
The Connecticut Audubon Society protects Connecticut’s birds, other wildlife, and their habitats through conservation, education, and advocacy. The Fairfield center has indoor and outdoor activities for kids, including a sweet little fairy garden and small animals.
SONO Collection
The SONO Collection is a beautiful “mall” located in Norwalk. It’s hard to call it your typical mall with everything it has to offer. It is beautifully decorated with lots of things to look at. There are also often many events going on. My kids love playing in the CAMP store.
Bruce Museum
Located in Greenwich, the Bruce Museum is a great spot to visit. It is currently open but undergoing some construction. Due to the construction, the admission fee is currently “pay as you wish,” but normally, it is free on Tuesdays. Check out the website for the current list of exhibitions.
MOCA Westport
Formerly the Westport Arts Center, MoCA Westport is a destination for contemporary visual arts exhibitions, music performances, and comprehensive arts education. Admission is currently free due to a generous grant. Check out the website for a list of exhibitions (probably geared towards older children). There is also a kids’ drop-in studio hours for a minimal fee and other events.
Webb Mountain Discovery Zone
Though it is “outdoor,” I would be remiss not to include Webb Mountain in my list of free activities. It is an outdoor learning center in Monroe that is completely free to families. It is worth bundling up and checking out on a mild winter day!
