The Day the Tooth Fairy Forgot to Come & Other Epic Mom Fails

mom failsMy daughter bounded through the door at 7 a.m. to wake me up as she typically does, although instead of excited to get her day going, I could tell by the look on her face that something was wrong. “Mommy, the Tooth Fairy never came!” she said through tears, holding the zip-lock bag containing her teeth.

Yep, that’s right; my 5-year-old lost her first two teeth on the same day, and the Tooth Fairy, aka, her exhausted mom, totally spaced and forgot to pay her a visit.

I thought the pit in my stomach would swallow me whole, but somehow, I pulled it together and came up with a quick excuse. “Honey, the Tooth Fairy can’t fly in the rain. Her wings will get wet. Look at the weather outside!” Lucky for me, it was raining cats and dogs.

The Tooth Fairy paid handsomely the very next night, and life moved on. My massive fail, however, got me thinking of all the times I’d dropped the ball as a mom. There was the time I sent peanut butter to our nut-free school or the time I forgot to dress my twins for pajama day. More recently, in the time of Covid, there was the time I forgot masks for the playground (if dirty looks could kill!).

The common thread weaved through all these episodes was how quickly my children moved on. I was the one feeling guilty and beating myself up.

I polled my fellow contributors and realized mom fails are more common than not! I’m sharing their responses with you today because I think we can all use a reminder that these things happen!

This pandemic is hard, and everyone is struggling right now! Let us inspire you to find grace in the fact that no mom is perfect….especially in 2020!

Elizabeth P: “I forgot to dress my daughter for picture day. I bounced back when I saw how adorable her pictures were regardless of the outfit!”

Michelle S: “The Tooth Fairy has forgotten to come on several occasions. I also went to a birthday parade a whole week late this summer.“

Lauren K: “My daughter’s daycare had a Zoom “open house” to see the classroom. She was in it last year, so I skipped it. I did NOT know they would show the kids the iPad so they could say hi, and my poor kid cried because I wasn’t there. Luckily the director is AMAZING and FaceTimed me so my daughter could give me my own private tour. But I really missed the mark on that one!”

Jamie M: “I volunteered to make Irish soda bread in my daughter’s preschool class. I brought the recipe and all the ingredients, and while making it with the kids, I forgot to add the baking soda. I left after it went into the oven, and it never rose!”
