Boy or Girl? Making the Big Reveal

0

As soon as I tell anyone I’m pregnant, (or they notice my belly), the very first question they ALWAYS ask is, “Do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl?” I can’t blame anyone for asking the question – I do the same thing to other pregnant women! And it’s always funny to me that no matter what the answer is, the response is always the same… “Awww, that’s GREAT! Little <insert boys or girls> are just the BEST!”

Before we found out with both of my pregnancies, and people would ask whether I had a preference for a boy or girl, my answer was always the same: “I want a healthy, happy child. Doesn’t matter what it is!” My husband and I were both so eager to find out the sex each time, we couldn’t wait for birth. (And a note to those of you who CAN make it through an entire pregnancy without finding out… I admire you! Tell me your secret).

It’s definitely one of the greatest surprises to learn the sex, regardless of whether you do it at 10-weeks with advanced genetics testing, or when the baby is actually born. (We are huge fans of the advanced genetics testing – talk to your doctor or a genetics counselor if you haven’t heard about it before, although I’m not sure if it’s readily available to young couples, or just reserved for “older” ones like me and my husband. And we can’t speak highly enough about genetics counselor Sarah Clarke at Stamford Hospital. She is amazing!). So we’ve already known for quite some time what we’re having this time around. Which leads me to our reveal. How would we tell our family in a fun, creative way?

I have always wanted to have a gender reveal “party,” complete with cupcakes that had inner frosting in either pink or blue. I think of all of my family and friends gathering around the cupcakes and excitedly taking the first bite together and all squealing with delight… “Oh, I just KNEW it was a <insert girl or boy>!!!” But the idea of that kind of party makes my husband squirm, and it would be awkward to have it without him. And to be honest, this baby I’m currently pregnant with has sucked the ever-loving energy out of me. So really, I only have time to take a video of some sort of reveal, or a picture. (And I apologize in advance for depriving my family of cupcakes).

I love some of the ideas I’ve seen online. You people can be so creative sometimes! Here are a few of my faves:

Alyssa and her husband opened this box in front of their friends and family, and it was a surprise for them too! So sweet.

Darcie wasn't into the pink or blue theme, so they chose these adorable fortune cookies to reveal.

Tiffany used her dog to reveal that they're having a boy! And I'm in awe of how they got the dog to pose like that. So cute!

As for ours… I wanted my son Jake to make the announcement, but being that his only words are pretty much, “momma, dada, and doggie,” that wasn’t going to work. So instead, I bought a balloon with the gender and gave it to him to parade around the house. Of course, he let go after one second of holding it, and broke out in laughter. And so our “reveal” became more of a joke than anything else! Here’s a link to the video: IMG_6805

Regardless we are SO excited that he’s getting a little SISTER, who he will hopefully look out for and protect when he’s old enough to understand that. And I’m excited to restore some balance in my fraternity house… er, home (I live with my husband, son, and our 100-pound male dog). But most of all, I look forward to the day when my daughter is old enough to help me ensure that the toilet seats are down more than they are up in our house!
