Body Back Week 5: Getting Rid of the Gremlin

1384376_701995203162037_147391757_nYou may recall at the beginning of my Body Back journey, I confessed that I could not do a push-up nor a single sit-up nor hold a plank for more than a few wobbly seconds.  Well, here we are at the end of week five, and I’m happy to report that I CAN do more than one push-up, I CAN do more than one sit-up, and I CAN hold a plank that is no longer wobbly.   And while I can feel myself growing stronger every week, I still struggle with the gremlin on my shoulder telling me I can’t do something before I’ve even tried.

Who is this gremlin?  The voice in my head yells, “no way – you can’t do six 50-yard sprints” or “a one-minute plank – you can’t hold it for that long!”  I’m ready to get rid of the gremlin.

This week, I’m focusing on listening to the goddess on my other shoulder – the one who’s saying “you’ve got this” or “you CAN do this” or “you are strong and getting stronger every day.”  I need to continue to think about how far I’ve come and celebrate the little triumphs that have come from my time with Body Back.  In addition, our group is so encouraging and so supportive.  They are helping me let go of my gremlin, too.  These women are my other goddesses, and a lot of my inner strength has come from them.  BodyBackFocusing on my goddess has helped in surprising places.  On Tuesday, I went into the Gym at school to drop something off to one of the Physical Education teachers while my students were in Phys. Ed. class.  I asked the kids what they were doing, and one of my boys responded, “We’re doing push-ups today.”  I said, “I can do a push-up,” to which the boy replied, “No, you can’t” {Ready, Gremlin???}.  I looked at my student and calmly replied, “Watch me.”  I dropped to the ground {in my work clothes and shoes} and began to do one push-up after another.  His jaw dropped, and some of my girls started to cheer me on.  I felt so proud to show off my newfound strength in front of my students.

So, goodbye, gremlin – it’s been nice knowing you, but I’m stronger than you are.
