ACT of CT Honors Local Community in WORKING

Although I will admit that I am a TV junkie, one of my favorite ways to spend time with friends and family is going to the theater. There is nothing better than seeing live talent, in my opinion. Whether it be sharing this experience with my kids, a date night with my spouse, or a gals’ night out, I don’t think you can go wrong with the theater. So when I was asked if I wanted to see ACT of Connecticut’s (A Contemporary Theatre) brand new version of Stephen Schwartz’s WORKING – A MUSICAL, I jumped at the chance, especially because I heard from a fellow contributor that their second show, Evita, was wonderful.

If you are not familiar with ACT of CT,  they are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) Equity theater located in Ridgefield, CT. Founded and led by three accomplished theater professionals, ACT of CT presents limited engagement runs of well-known Broadway plays and musicals, as well as world-premiere plays and musicals by the next generation of writers and composers. Each show features both Broadway stars and local Fairfield and Westchester County talent. I couldn’t wait to experience Broadway-caliber performances without having to take a trip to New York City!

If you’ve never heard of WORKING, it has been nominated for six TONY Awards, including Best Score, and is based on Studs Terkel’s 1974 best-selling book of interviews with American workers from all walks of life, including a school teacher, housewife, fireman, millworker, and waitress. Collaborating closely with Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz (WICKED, GODSPELL, PIPPIN), Artistic Director Daniel C. Levine has created a contemporary version that weaves recent interviews with local workers from different professions into WORKING’S enduring musical score.

Levine’s version has an incredibly talented cast, which consists six actors playing 26 roles. Yes, you read that right – six actors playing 26 roles! It is a very unique experience to see the actors transform into different roles right before your eyes. In the words of Levine, “The music is brilliant in capturing each character’s hopes, dreams and struggles.” The show also incorporates video clips of local Ridgefield workers.

The theater itself is beautiful and because it is a small theater, you are guaranteed a great view of the stage. Concessions are offered at the front (including wine  and beer in adult sippy cups, which is amazing in itself), which you can enjoy in your seats while you watch the show. ACT of CT definitely supports their local community, even through their concession stand, which offers beers from Ridgefield’s own Nod Hill Brewery.

Performances of WORKING are February 14 – March 10: Thursdays at 7:00 p.m., Fridays at 8:00 p.m., Saturdays at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.. To purchase tickets, go to www.actofct.org or visit the box office at 36 Old Quarry Road, Ridgefield, CT or call 475-215-5433.

ACT will have two more shows this year:
  • Austen’s Pride – March 28 through April 14, 2019
  • The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee – May 31 through June 16.
But there’s more to ACT of CT than just a fun night out to see amazing talent. In addition to fully produced main stage productions, ACT of CT hosts new productions, Broadway Unplugged, youth education classes, master classes, camps, workshops, and a conservatory program for high school students.

If you have an opportunity to see a performance at ACT of CT, don’t hesitate… I promise that it will be a unique experience that you won’t regret! Fairfield County is lucky to have a theater of this caliber. Visit actofct.org for further information.
